Best floor speech in my five years in the legislature comes from 29 y/o freshman legislator on the Birth Certificate Bill:

I rise today to speak in support of this bill because it’s a very vital issue. Our discussion today is about more than just a word on a piece of paper 1/
The real question we are being asked today is what is truth?

I ask you to consider that today. What is the definition of truth?

Now there are two options for this: either truth is an objective and unchanging standard, or it is one that is subjective and relative. 2/
It changes based on someone’s emotions or situations.

There two different views of truth are completely different and are not compatible.

If we as a Body cannot agree on the very basic foundation of civilization, the differences between men and women that are biological,
fundamental, scientific and observable; if we cannot decide if something at the chromosome level is decided at the moment of conception; if we cannot agree that this is objective truth, than I don’t know what is true. 4/
And if we decide to live in a society that is based on subjective truth and relativism, this is not a society of law and order. This is a society of chaos. It is one where individuals live in fear of speaking the wrong word. 5/
We are here today because we were elected to fulfill the lawmaking branch of our state government. We are the people who are in charge of maintain law and order in our society. The laws that we pass and the decisions that we make must be based on objective truth. 6/
So I ask today that you affirm that objective truth does still exist. I urge you to vote yes. 7/
