FIVE KEY MOMENTS IN (some) ROMANCE

Does your romance story keep disappointing readers by the third date? Check whether you’ve hit these five key plot beats.

MEET-CUTE

This is the moment your protagonists meet. Make it big, make it small, but make the reader FEEL the spark that will pull the characters together for the rest of the book.
CUTTING THE HERD

This isn’t the first time your character thought they’d met “the one.” But this time will be different! Give a moment—be it big or small, but a single moment—that perks the character’s ears up. Suddenly, this potential mate seems different than everyone else.
FUN & GAMES

This doesn’t mean that the CHARACTERS are necessarily having fun. This is when THE READER is having the most fun seeing these characters together. They could be at each other’s throats—and yet the reader has never felt more invested.
ALL IS LOST

Again, it doesn’t matter if the characters are even aware of what’s happening between them, but the reader is more invested in this relationship than ever. Which makes it the perfect time for them to break up!
GRAND GESTURE

Whoever has the bigger flaw makes the first move to get back together. It has to be an action that requires true vulnerability for that specific character. Make them face their biggest fear. Beyond that, the grand gesture could be anything.
