Let's see

First thing to note is that when Jesus made this statement, He wasn't referring to or on His way to Heaven, He was on his way to the Cross. Hence this statement He made to Peter...
John 13:36b "Jesus answered, You are not able to follow Me now where I am going, but you shall...
John 13:36b "Jesus answered, You are not able to follow Me now where I am going, but you shall...
..follow me afterwards"
Referring to how Peter would not follow Him to the cross at the time. That's by the way.
So if He was going to the cross, the statement, "I go to prepare a place for you", would mean that the work done on the cross would secure a place for us. Where?

In God! In Christ.
"In my Father's House, there are many mansions."
This was figurative to show how much room God has for many sons to come into salvation and His kingdom.
And that's not even all
What really would happen at the cross that will support the above statement?

The House of God is where God dwells. And at that time, it was just Jesus. The fullness of God dwelt permanently in Him. He was the House of God. You meet Him, you meet the Father
So when He would die, anyone who believed on that work, the Spirit of God would dwell in them
So..

So..
...by those standards, the House of God(Christ) would have many mansions(you and I and all who believe)
Because you now, are the House of God. The place He prepared for you was to be with Him. To be in Christ. And yes of course, anyone in christ operates from heaven already!

So no, it wasn't talking about constructing mansions in heaven. It was about making room for yoy in God's House so you would be a mansion to house God in you
