THREAD: Friends, there are SO MANY pressing issues in our state right now. And I cannot wait to get to work on them. But as I see it, we don't really have the time to do much else until we can navigate through the overwhelming burden of COVID-19.
The virus impacts so many basic functions of daily life: health (obviously), business & the economy, education, childcare, and subsets of all those things (mental health, domestic violence, the arts, tourism etc.).
The quickest path toward making COVID-19 a non-entity in our lives are 1.) avoidance & 2.) protection. To avoid more people getting sick we must follow medical advice which tells us to consistently & properly wear masks, avoid gathering in groups outside our household & hand wash
To protect (from the virus), we must be willing to take the vaccine as soon as it is available to us and to make sure there is compliance with the second dose. These two things are simple but they require societal compliance.
We all know that everyone loves their autonomy. Heck--so do I! We don't like to be told what to do or how to live our lives. In most cases, this is totally cool. But sometimes, our behavior and choices can put other in danger. Those are the times government has a role.
Examples include the smoking ban. 2nd hand smoke is deadly. Nobody is saying you cannot smoke, the government just said, you cannot smoke in certain public places where others would be in harms way by your actions. Many other examples, of course.
The point is sometimes we need laws to remind us what we probably know in our hearts. Our actions impact others thus we have a responsibility to act outside our own personal desires sometimes, for the greater good of society.
I 100% know we all agree that we ALL want a return to hanging out with friends in bars, going out to dinner with a big group of co-workers, attending concerts shoulder to shoulder, sharing a hug with our loved ones and friends, and those kids back in classrooms.
This can happen faster and with fewer people suffering illness, job loss, and even death if we go back to those two things: 1.) Avoid getting and spreading the virus via mask wearing and 2.) Protecting ourselves from getting the virus through vaccination.
We. Are. Almost. Through. This.

Please do your part. Call and email your elected officials and tell them your story. Tell the WI GOP why you need them to stop fighting measures that will get us back to the WI we love.

Peace Out, All. And make those calls.
