On January 27, 2021 an ambulance was delayed by approximately 7 minutes following a cellular call to 911 in the Wetaskiwin area. AHS EMS has been dispatching ambulances in the Wetaskiwin area since 2013; this is not related to the recent AHS EMS Dispatch Consolidation.
This response is being reviewed. The patient outcome of this call was not affected by the delay.
Timely patient care is of the utmost importance. It is AHS EMS policy to verify all addresses during the dispatch process on every 911 call. There is a failsafe option that re-verifies each address.
Procedural errors are rare in the dispatch process. EMS policy is that any errors made by staff or policies not properly followed are reviewed immediately and opportunities for process improvement are identified. Staff are also given additional training where required.
