Here's a thing any PD will tell you: at least five times a day for each of us (so hundreds of times a day overall) we go to a line DA and ask for some kind of restorative outcome--dropped charges, treatment, programs, etc.
And they say, *I* would love to offer that, BUT...

"My supervisor won't let me."
Won't let them consent to treatment court, won't let them offer probation instead of jail, won't let them drop a ridiculous charge, etc.

Now, a lot of people are pointing out that discretion can't only go one way, and that @GeorgeGascon should be allowed to do what he ran on...and that also, legally, you can't sue your office over a policy. 4/6 https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2021-01-28/george-gascon-los-angeles-district-attorney-lawsuit
But I'm wondering how many of the DAs who are suing now have ever said "Oh I wish I could offer that but my boss won't let me."
How many of them have feigned helplessness to seem more human in court.

As far as I can tell, these people had no backbone when asked to help people get a second chance.
They only grew a backbone to fight against restorative ideas and fight to pack more people into more cages for longer.
We all know how well that works.
