#otd in 1906, the Western Live Stock Show opened what would become one of the largest stock shows in the world. That first Show was limited to the Western States, but afterward, organizers (incl. plenty of Denver luminaries &politicians) decided to open their doors. 1/5
When the show came back in 1907, it had been re-branded (without a branding iron) as the National Western Stock Show and included four times as many entries as it did in 1906. In 1908, it was opened to participants from across the country. 2/5
The Stock Show was such a hit that by its third year, the City of Denver built the National Amphitheater to house it.
Never an event to rest on its laurels, in 1931, the Stock Show added a rodeo, today the largest indoor rodeo in the world. 3/5
The massive National Western Stock Show is now the largest stock show in the world if you go by # of animals.
While we missed the Stock Show this year, plans are to have it back in its hay-covered glory next year. We'll be there with bells (or cowboy boots). 4/5
