hi I thought i'd write a lil thread on creativity in the work place and ways to make sure you're Doing Your Best You.
chunking: it's scientifically proven that your brain struggles to jump between creative and admin type stuff. chunk out your activities through the day to make sure you're having a creative MORNING and an admin afternoon so you don't fry your brain.
make time: a tough one in fast paced businesses and agncies, but it's imperative that you're able to carve out time to do what you do best - ideate. Push back where you can to make sure you're giving yourself breathing space
Absorb: again, bit of a dichotomy, but you need to give yourself time to be absorbing the world. From politics, social media trends, news, art, music, film, tv, social convo etc - you need to be DEDICATING time to these so your brain is getting it's creative fuel.
be kind to yourself: being a creative is harder than it may look to some people. We are paid to turn emotions into actionable business goals and KPIs. We need to give ourself space to breathe too as being exposed to emotional at all times in your job can be really tough to manage
don't be precious: it's so easy to get caught up in your own idea. YOU can visualise it. YOU can feel it. Others may not, and it's again scientifically proven we have emotional bias towards our own stuff (thanks @Kirsty_Hulse). Learn to share and understand others; osmosis is key
push hard if you know it's right: SAYING THAT - if you know something is right, tell the story WHY it is. Don't just shoe horn until it fits into a deck - use an insight, an emotional backdrop, a learned experience of you or others to back it up - you're the EXPERT here.
read: stories. stories stories stories. This is the job at it's heart - its all well and good reading business books and self help, but storytelling is an ancient technique that makes us human. Learn to understand structure and apply that to selling stuff in. Stories are fun!!
adapt: learning to adapt ideas and functionality is key. I've got to a point where a brief goes in and a response comes out, with the right call to actions, the right platforms, the right tone etc - learning to be malleable with your ideation and understanding FUNCTION is key x
