A thread about disability euphemisms... A friend who is a parent of a young disabled child recently asked for my advice about using the term disabled rather than the euphemisms and I thought it might be useful to others too-
2 points are key: 1) if you really don't want to promote stigma and shame around disability, then you shouldn't be afraid of using the word. You can't have disability pride if you can't even use the term. There is power in the word.
2) unlike euphemisms, the term disability is a legal one that comes with protections that were hard won. "Special needs" people don't have an activist movement that got laws passed that protect them from discrimination. Disabled people do.
