Bionicle G2 flopped in big part because lego didn't market it anywhere near as aggressively or effectively as the first time around.
When it came to attracting kids' attention, they expected older Bionicle fans to do the heavy lifting and market the reboot for them through word of mouth, telling their little cousins and siblings, nieces and nephews about a time before time. By then, though...
those oldschool Bionicle fans were in college. They were in their "dark age" falling out of the lego hobby altogether as the pressures of "adulting" took over. The first time many people HEARD of G2 was the cancellation announcement.
You can imagine how frustrating that must be, to learn that an entire generation of that line you liked as a kid came and went while you weren't looking. Some would've happily bought some G2 sets, but they DIDN'T KNOW.
How are people supposed to know your product exists if you don't TELL them about it?
