some interesting news these past few weeks about defunding the police.
austin is using money form the police budget to help fund a new wraparound services initiative for the homeless. https://theappeal.org/austin-cut-police-budget-supportive-housing-homelessness/
in seattle, the public will get to decide how to spend $30 million, almost half of which comes directly from the police budget. RELATEDLY....seattle police had more cops participate in the capitol riot than any other department. https://theappeal.org/politicalreport/seattle-participatory-budgeting-defund-police/
that's a pretty damn good argument for democracy -- taking funds away from a department with multiple people who tried to overthrow an elected administration and allowing the public to control that money, instead.
also, another example of puncturing police power and hopefully reducing the cops budget - san francisco voters have decided to abolish mandatory police staffing levels. https://theappeal.org/san-francisco-abolish-mandatory-police-staffing-levels/
