1) Think big on these! New ideas, unique approaches, out of the box thinking, highly practical thinking, all of it, are warmly welcome. If you think your work doesn't apply, think again. If you think again come up with a maybe. Submit something!
2) Junior scholars ( @BtGProjectDC help us out) take the lead. Be adventurous and put together a team. Call up a senior scholar and see if they will be on your team. Call up other junior scholars - build YOUR dream team.
3) Team diversity is key. We know this! Multi-disciplinary, career path, regional experience, personal background, etc. Be purposeful about the establishing research teams.
4) Creativity! Across the board but in two ways inparticular - first is with your research question. Don't rinse, recycle, and repeat. Second, how you disseminate your research. "Paper and Panel"? zzzzzzzzzz! Think about your audience, the mediums they use, and how to reach them
5) On the domestic-international RFP - you'll see language indicating consideration of linking Dom-Intl policymaking. If you think it is already linked and impactful - per someone like @stschrader1's Badges without Borders research - then you should also consider applying
6) The requested concept note is short. Really short. Insanely short. Get to the point. Research Q, context/prev. research, methods, dissemination, desired outcome, funds needed (not a full budget, use your space for other stuff). Meat and potatoes are context/methods/comms.
7) Take all of this advice with a grain of salt. As my boss says - this and $2.75 will get you a small cup of coffee at Starbucks. That said, I hope you will seriously consider applying and I believe that thoughtful, purposeful, and adventurous proposals will rise to the top.
