Friday celebration of women in neuroscience!
(forgot what # should be used, please share!)
I want to introduce people new to the field to the work of Helen Barbas at Boston University. Her anatomy work is among the most beautiful and for decades has linked anatomy and function
🧶
2) Her work has greatly contributed to the understanding of the interactions between emotion and cognition:
Barbas, H. (2000). Connections underlying the synthesis of cognition, memory, and emotion in primate prefrontal cortices. Brain Research Bulletin, 52, 319-330.
3) Another classic describes the connections between the prefrontal cortex and amygdala.
Ghashghaei, H. T., Hilgetag, C. C., & Barbas, H. (2007). Sequence of information processing for emotions based on the anatomic dialogue between prefrontal cortex and amygdala. Neuroimage.
4) The strong connections between the amygdala and medial PFC and orbitofrontal cortex are well known.
But the study also shows connections, although not very strong, even between lateral parts of PFC and basolateral amygdala.
6) Briefly, regions with similar differentiation in lamination (4, 5, 6, cortical layers) tend to form small, medium, and large scale cortical circuits.
7) Her work is truly inspiring! Personally, her 1995 paper greatly helped shape my own ideas about the interactions between emotion and cognition.
