1. When I saw the J & J data last night the first thing I thought (because my brain is broken) was "Some Americans are going to trash this on Twitter"

One shot and it prevents hospitalizations? Stick it in my arm right now. I'll wait in line.

But there's a more important point. https://twitter.com/nxthompson/status/1355154971444953088
2. A one shot vaccine that prevents hospitalizations which also doesn't require super cold storage (like the Pfizer vaccine) is a boon for developing countries. This is not to suggest that people in developing countries deserve a less effective vaccine...this is about logistics
3. If you look at DR Congo, for example, you have a country which has less than 1,800 miles of paved road...DR Congo is the 11th largest country by size in the world. By comparison, Saudi Arabia, which is a smaller country, has 45,000 miles of paved road.
4. So when you're talking about a vaccine which doesn't require super, super cold storage like Pfizer does, AND only requires one shot, this is a big deal for countries like DR Congo.

But, again, I'd happily take it too...
5. I use DR Congo as an example because I've spent so much time there...

Look how massive DRC is...can you imagine transporting a fragile vaccine which requires super cold storage along roads like the one on the right?

That's why a vaccine like J&J is so critical...
6. Now obviously some vaccine transport in a country like DR Congo will be done by plane and helicopter, but roads are an important part of this dynamic.

And the fact that medical workers don't need to return for a second shot is a game changer!
7. I know as Americans we tend to focus on ourselves but this pandemic isn't going to be over until we have widespread vaccination across the globe. Americans being vaccinated isn't enough to lower our guard completely.
8. If I can't get you to care about people in DRC, perhaps you'll look at this selfishly....the faster people in countries like DRC get vaccinated, the faster you can go on your vacations and the faster you can lower your guard here in USA

Vaccines like J&J make that much easier
