Live tweeting “The Dig” on Netflix from 16:00 GMT. Expect delight, maybe indignation, excitement, the works. (The last time there was an ‘archaeology’ film it was Indiana Jones, and I have thoughts about that.) #ActualArchaeologist https://www.netflix.com/title/81167887?s=i&trkid=15035895
Ok. Papa says I can eat some of his Christmas chocolate while I watch The Dig! This is a double win. #ActualArchaeologist
#ActualArchaeologist look at that sky!

Alright. My papa has a bike just like that under our house in Hertfordshire.

Not bad, not bad, clothes are good.

Oh, look at that!!!!! God. I first went there when I was a tiny nipper.

Ooh, there’s going to be bioturbation!
#ActualArchaeologist such a class thing, even now, an excavator v an archaeologist. Class and education and everything, bound up in one word. And all those antiquarians who could do it cos of inherited wealth.
#ActualArchaeologist oh good, folks from the museum. That’s going to go so well.

Oh good, classism and sexism.

STAY!!

Yes! SMELL!!

(I know the outcome, but all the same, no spoilers)
#ActualArchaeologist so much field work isn’t done in a field, and just sometimes it is.

The dead should always get that courtesy. Too many people are on display in our museums. So much of this is tied into colonialism, exoticism, and the idea that just because we can we will.
#ActualArchaeologist

Yas, look for the anomalies.

Imagine.

Wow, just think what they’d have done with lidar.

Really worth reading up on what happened to some of the big sites or unmistakeable archaeological feature during WW2. Looking at you Uffington Horse (covered over)
#ActualArchaeologist Ohhh, look at that mud. Lovely. God, I miss it so much.

OH MY GODDDD!!!!!

That’s a fantastic bit of cinema reveal!

And look at that context!

(Come on, give us more paperwork)
#ActualArchaeologist ok look, duck boards. They have a whole shepherds hut too. I hope they’ve got a flask.

I’m writing a long bit of cnf about a dig I was on a few years back. This is such a good reminder of the terrible weather & the mud I walked over half of Oxfordshire
#ActualArchaeologist oh god, flooded sites and trenches 🤦🏼‍♀️ hard when you’ve got access for three weeks and it rains for eighteen days straight. I’ve not dug in Suffolk, not as an adult, that looks proper claggy. (Not a tech term.)
#ActualArchaeologist bog off museum mutts. Yes, I know. I can hatelove them don’t @ me.

Have a look at what happened at Avebury for further class based infuriations.
#ActualArchaeologist

This is an interesting question isn’t it, who ‘owns’ sites or finds of public interest/importance on ‘privately owned’ land. Not owns in the sense of who gets them (that’s now more or less agreed - portable antiquities etc). But who controls the excavation
#ActualArchaeologist

Yeah 🙄 a woman archaeologist being patronised. They got that right.

Ha! Interesting reveals about other well known archaeologists. 😉

Yeah. We’ve all stepped on something sometime 😬

(Not saying a word about the Neolithic hearth I might have stepped on)
#ActualArchaeologist oh look she’s found gold!

Everyone goes all starry eyed at gold. Especially in a burial. Still got to be careful and not too excited. (I like things that aren’t gold. Gimme bone and pot.)

BB for the win!

Yes it is earlier you daft bag!
#ActualArchaeologist Have a look at what happened to things in the BM and other European capital city museums during the war. Folks often say oh but museums are safe, we’re protecting xyz artefacts. Yeah?
#ActualArchaeologist Just a quick reminder that the dark ages weren’t. It’s just a construct and not a helpful one at that.
#ActualArchaeologist hurrah for public and community archaeology!
#ActualArchaeologist nice - photography as fixing things as they go past.

Oh, this is a nice bit of discussion about how we mythologise the past, the nostalgia for what isn’t and never was, the sentimentality.

Nice inference being drawn against the backdrop of imminent war
#ActualArchaeologist

God, the burdens placed on children.

And yes, we all fail. And if we didn’t make so much of a thing of success, they would be easier to carry.

Oh! Both my parents have talked about this radio announcement so much.
#ActualArchaeologist

Pa says he remembers this find being in the papers! (He’d have been eleven at the time), he was absolutely bedazzled, he would have loved to be an excavator. No aspirations to be an archaeologist. That involved money and education. But he was 😍
#ActualArchaeologist the history of archaeology is absolutely stunning! The biographies of some archaeologists too. @/ahistoryinart has a biog of Basil Brown coming this summer. What happens behind the scenes and over time? 👌
#ActualArchaeologist archaeology is both a destructive and constructive process. To date one more or less can’t happen without the other. But there are changes and new technologies all the time. This is not an uncontested field or practice. Not in the past, not now either.
#ActualArchaeologist someone burst into church on the Sunday morning when papa was little to say that war had been announced. They had a wireless in the sacristy that the priest turned on so they could all hear.
#ActualArchaeologist the Sutton Hoo treasure isn’t just what they found, but how. Basil Brown was difficult & irascible maybe, but also patient and tenacious and imaginative.

The centre in Suffolk is brilliant, the treasure, still in the British Museum is OUTSTANDING!
#ActualArchaeologist I’ll be watching again this evening to get all the bits I missed. Just like someone who thinks maybe they skipped a corner of their trench cos the tea bell went and they forgot to note down which one it as. (Don’t do this.)

Thanks for watching along.
