THREAD 1/ Thanks very much to @Islamchannel for having me on to discuss the Prevent Review with @YasminQureshiMP @DrSuriyah and @DrMusharrafH. Below I explain why the review is a distraction and offer useful research based insight into Prevent. https://twitter.com/Islamchannel/status/1354926994153213953
/ Former director of @ChtyCommission and @HJS_Org is clearly an absurd and insincere choice to review Prevent. But let's not be distracted, a review without the option to #endprevent is not really a review. We can't keep waiting for the right review, Prevent must be ended now.
/ As I said last night, after Carlile and now Shawcross, there is no good faith left. In fact, if defenders of Prevent such as @QuilliamOrg want to claim any credibility, it is for them to denounce the @ukhomeoffice's absurd Shawcross Review.
/ The Gov may not mind if the choice of Shawcross blows up in their face, this isn't the real play. @LordWalney and @CommissionCE are seeking to expand the criminal law on hate speech. So while we're distracted by Shawcross, Prevent may be replaced by worse. My forthcoming book:
/ Of schools, @AnnaLockley says, "The Prevent Counter-terrorism Strategy is causing an environment of anxiety amongst Muslim pupils. The Government’s Prevent Review must acknowledge the anxiety it creates." @SOASICOP
/ The NHS. @hilary_aked of @Medact says Prevent exacerbates physical & mental health issues, racial and religious injustice, and undermines patient confidentiality. They say, "Abolish the Prevent duty. Instead adopt evidence-based public health policies." @SOASICOP
/ In Higher Education, compelling research by @mathewjguest & @AScottBaumann shows that "Policy makers may not intend Prevent to perpetuate unhelpful stereotypes, but its assumptions resonate most with those who hold hostile views on Islam." @SOASICOP
