I wrote a piece with another #SFUSD parent about the problems with the Board of Ed. Its members, chosen in a low-turnout election captured by special interests, are on their way to higher office, so they play politics and avoid the hard problems. https://www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/openforum/article/How-San-Francisco-s-school-board-is-infected-by-15907202.php
The renaming fiasco (best summarized by @EskSF 's great piece in @MLNow https://missionlocal.org/2021/01/the-san-francisco-school-districts-renaming-debacle-has-been-a-historic-travesty/ ) is but one example of this. The MOU they "negotiated" with @UESF for this school year was an abomination, and effectively tied @SFUSD_Supe's hands about reopening. (2/x)
They also declined to use a private donation to hire a consultant specifically to help with remote learning design, simply because the consultant had worked with charter schools in the past, as @hknightsf wrote about here: https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/heatherknight/article/SF-school-district-already-flunked-distance-15400967.php (3/x)
@LondonBreed and the Supervisors (cc @RafaelMandelman and @myrnamelgar) should appoint the Board of Education instead. That's how it works in NYC, where schools have opened this year. The current elected body is not up for today's challenges.
