one phenomenon at play here is simple timing: a vaccine this effective would've been heralded as a miracle if it came before Pfizer/Moderna. those set a high bar for topline efficacy figures, but J&J results still wonderful, esp. for simple, one-shot non-mRNA vax.
obviously having a vaccine that's easier to store/transport/administer but slightly less effective presents a lot of potentially problematic equity issues that we need to be mindful of, though.
I'm also concerned that people might refuse the J&J shot bc they want Pfizer/Moderna instead and that'll be a complicated thing to handle, but unclear how much that'll actually happen
