2. The J&J vaccine showed an 85% efficacy at protecting against severe #Covid19 — in multiple settings around the world, including in South Africa. It was 100% effective against hospitalization & deaths. This is important.
3. J&J says it expects to be able to be able to produce 1 billion doses of vaccine a year — enough to protect 1 billion people. But Operation Warp Speed has previously warned that there won't be lots of J&J vaccine supply for the US until April.
4. Dr. Tony Fauci notes that the J&J vaccine's vaccine efficacy in the US — 72%, ie higher than the global efficacy rate of 66% — would have been hugely exciting a couple of months ago, before the mRNA vaccines came in at 95%. This vaccine can contribute to the #Covid19 fight.
5. The J&J vaccine is fridge stable; it doesn't have the same onerous shipping & storage requirements of the mRNA vaccines. It can be used with greater ease in more settings. It's also inexpensive to make. "Frankly, simple is beautiful," says Operation Warp Speed's Matt Hepburn.
6. Part of the J&J trial involves sequential blood draws to look for whether vaccinated people can be asymptomatically infected & transmit virus. Very few cases so far but it will be a month or 2 before they have enough data to analyze this.
7. J&J says it will be filing its Emergency Use Authorization application to @US_FDA next week, and @EMA_News & other regulatory bodies after that.
8. The US currently has an order for 100 M doses of the J&J, with the order to be fully filled by the end of June. It has options to buy at least 200M more but no hints today about when the additional vaccine could be available if the option is exercised.
9. J&J saw no deaths in the vaccine arm of the trial anywhere in the world. There were deaths (they didn't say how many) in the placebo arm of the trial in multiple sites across the world.
10. It's hard to compare today's J&J data to the results from the Pfizer & Moderna trials that reported out before Christmas. The pandemic has changed — the South African variant clearly erodes vaccine efficacy. We don't know how the Pfizer or Moderna vaxes work against it.
11. Thing to note about the J&J results: The immune response seemed to improve over time, with no cases in the vaccine arm after Day 49 post injection.
It's possible maturation of the response may take longer with some vaxes than others. Durability an open Q for all the vaxes.
