I interviewed 10 mayoral candidates + listened to everything they've said publicly about school integration. I found stark differences in how they would approach an issue that has long divided our proudly liberal, deeply segregated city. A thread! 1/ https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/29/nyregion/nyc-mayoral-race-school-segregation.html
Integration has been weaponized by some as a superficial test of the candidates' progressivism.
But since integration is actually a proven school improvement strategy, I wanted to find out which candidates would actually use desegregation to bolster schools 2/

Stringer, Wiley, Donovan, Morales + Menchaca promised to make fundamental, likely disruptive changes. I was surprised both by Stringer's straightforwardness, and occasionally by Wiley's vagueness, considering both of their histories with the issue. 3/
In the other camp, Adams, Garcia, McGuire + Yang often tried to split the difference. This group believes they can diversify selective schools by creating more of them, rather than overhauling them, a strategy that has had very mixed results in NYC 4/
Selective admissions are just the tip of the iceberg. Integration is already a major issue in the mayors race, in part because the next admin will have to make huge decisions that BdB punted. Lots more to come. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/29/nyregion/nyc-mayoral-race-school-segregation.html
