Al-Hakam ibn Awana took over as Umayyad Governor of Sindh in 731 CE. He re-captured territories in Saurashtra, Kutch, South Rajasthan (Chittor), which had been lost by the preceding Governor, Tamim 'the imbecile'.

The Chalukya Viceroy of Navsari at the time was Avanijanashraya Pulakeshin (अवनीजनाश्रय पुलकेशीन), the great-grandson of the Pulakeshin II.
Dantidurga Rashtrakuta, the Chalukya feudatory at Achalpur (near Amravati, Maharashtra) joined for the defence at Navsari.

1. Dakshinapathasadhara (Pillar of the Dakshinapatha)
2. Anivartakaanivartayitri (Repeller of the Unrepellable)
3. Prithvivallabha (Beloved of the Earth)
