Most of the time I love the opportunity to go and deliver training on eating disorders and how to support somebody who is experiencing one.
Every now and then though I come up against little horrors like these....
[Thread]
No 1: "You don't look like you have an ED"
I actually had a mh professional say this to me. I was massively underweight & hadn't menstruated in a year.
Eating disorders don't have a "look", they're mental illnesses. Anybody can be affected & you CANNOT tell by looking at them!!
Moreover, most people with eating disorders do not become underweight, which is hugely problematic as many services only accept people for treatment when their BMI falls below a certain level.
No 2: This weird assumption that people with EDs either never eat or always eat.
It doesn't work like that, and EDs are often very secretive and people will go to great lengths to hide their behaviours in public
No 3: Wishing you had an ED.
Just fuck off. Would you say that to a cancer patient who lost weight through chemotherapy?
No 4: You think I haven't been trying "eat healthy and exercise"? I have a serious life-threatening mental illness and it's going to take a bit more than the Eatwell food pyramid to cure me. #edrecovery
