To round out an awesome @CAEP_Wellness week, I am thrilled to share an ED anthropologist's perspective on 1) who we are and 2) why that matters....

Thread 1/10
Culture is the culmination of a group's values, beliefs, and practices. It is learned and taught and always changing.
No two EDs have exactly the same culture, but so far I have found there are some commonalities...

Though by no means definitive or complete, it seems there are core values that are central to who we are, what we believe, and how we envision practicing....

Why are we talking about this in wellness week? Simply put,
-When work we do aligns with our core values we feel good.
-When work we do does not align with our core values we feel bad.
Value congruence=good
Value incongruence=bad

Let's look at a few examples....
First some value congruence
When we are "in the zone" in a resus or when we have an extremely busy, but somehow, fun shift we see value 6 (high functioning teams are necessary) reinforcing value 2 (expert at managing uncertainty)...

And the flip side...
Value incongruence

Like when a new disease seems to compromise your ability to be really good at value 1 (diagnosing and treating life threatening conditions)...

Or...
When cumulative system and organizational failures prevent you from being able to uphold value 1 (keeping patients and families at the centre of care) and capitalize on your desperate commitment to juggle value 4 (balancing needs and resources at a system level).

Unsurprisingly there is mounting evidence that value incongruence is a mediator of burnout....

This relationship adds real urgency to the careful alignment of organizational values.

We will continue to experience joys and navigate conflicts that exist at the interfaces of our values and at the sharp end of our systems.
As we shape our culture-who are we? Who do we want to be? What are the enablers/barriers to our values...on shift?...in the boardroom?

I've learned a few things studying ED culture but the most important???
...I feel so proud to belong.
