Oooh geez here comes anaesthetist inventor Archie Brain, inventor of the Laryngeal Mask Airway.

Total legend.

Brain is currently retired in the Seychelles, which is relatively safe and very beautiful. Always interested in other things other than anaesthesia. Family of painters, inventors, scientists. Catching up with other things. The 'LMA took over my life for 20 years.' #GAMC2021
Oh my, Brain has put an application in for a patent for a treatment for #covid19. And a painting in the background of a very young version of Anil Patel!

So called retirement!

When Brain invented the LMA, almost every anaesthetised patient was intubated. Already had 6 patents for other things when the LMA prototype was made.

Was trying to think of a way of not going through the vocal cords, to be less invasive. Many LMA prototypes made. Thinks in 3D. Examined the anatomy. By the time finished, almost sure it would work. Was a very experienced anaesthetist by then.Tried LMA on himself first.

Remembers vividly using on the first patient. Worked beautifully. Most exciting moment of his career.

However, it wasn't easy for others to understand. 'I was on my own for 7 years'.

Lots of support from HoD. During seven years of making prototypes, rescued some people who had failed to intubate their patients using his invention. Gradually he convinced others of its use. Then he had to find a manufacturer.

Reminds me of earlier commentary 'why are we so slow to change'.

Brain says those who saw him rescue airways with his LMA were convinced, but others were not.

James Cooper partnered with him, could see the vision, where others could not. Went to many companies to try and get the LMA made.

(hard to see how an LMA could be invented today ... not able to just use a new bit of kit on patients without all the checks and balances we have today ... he was only able to make headway by showing people how it worked when the patient was in dire straights).

#GAMC2021
He says he immediately knew the impact of his LMA invention. That it would change anaesthesia across the planet.

(despite his difficulties in getting it published ... )

Brain says he came across some very smart anaesthetists in humble locations.

Also came across some amazingly dumb anaesthetists in very sophisticated environments also.

When his invention took off, the cameras came ... the surgeons didn't like it.

Brain says patients are not aeroplanes. Every person is different.

It's not the equipment you use that is important, but the expertise of the person using the equipment.
