One thing is pretty clear: the fossil fuel industry in Australia has captured both the government and the opposition party.

The mechanics are simple: one or more party members promise to self-detonate if any policy to reduce emissions is put forward. A few thoughts....
....remember (always) that what matters for climate policy is what reduces emissions.

The gov has an 'emissions reductions fund', a 'technology roadmap', a Paris target etc etc and they do nothing.

Labor will have a 2050 target and something about jobs. Will that reduce GHGs?
Well - probably not. If there's any chance of a policy leading to reduced emissions, @fitzhunter knows he can kill it dead. He's in full control, and by proxy, so are the beneficiaries of selling and burning those harmful products.
We can see governments captured by the fossil fuel industry becoming just *like* the fossil fuel industry: mimicking the language, tactics and thought processes of the industry.

Hence:

- Set long term targets, but not short term
- Create policies, but none that impact GHGs
Of course, it matters that the party has been silent on this for two years already. The bushfires came and went, Nov 2020's stoush about 2030 targets came and went, and COP26 will come and go: all with zero opposition from the opposition.
Labor will probably end up taking the parts of the Dems climate platform they like - stuff about jobs, industry - without also including the meat. That's ending fossil subsidies, setting ambitious grid targets, submitting updated NDCs for 2030, and elevating racial justice.
Without a big change, both major parties will be going to the next election promising no change in Australia's rapidly worsening climate position - which is occurring as the rest of the world leaves the country behind.
