Random thoughts on the Proteas rebuilding:

It's not going to be pretty. It's not an event, but rather a process, and so it's not going to happen overnight. And sometimes it will look like there is no progress.
But, if done well, the results will show after a while.

But if the rebuild is to be a success, the management and coaches need to get rid of the "halfway house" feeling in the squad.
First, they do that by appointing a substantive captain, not this "temporary captain" thing. A rebuilding team needs to have a set course, direction.

A team can only have direction is there is a leader entrusted with the job at hand, a long-term appointment.
Having a temporary captain sends a message of a lack of trust. No one is being trusted to see through this process. There is a feeling of impermanence.

During a rebuild, you have to trust someone, otherwise you will never quite start the process. The team is in limbo.
There also needs to be consistency in selection. Consistency in selection also shows that you trust the people you pick. It also gives security to new guys.

One thing about a rebuild is that it is not the same as starting from scratch. This is why I appreciate the value of veterans like Faf, and the need to get guys like Aiden Markram set and going.
But brave calls also need to be made.

Guys like Sarel Erwee, Kyle Verrynne, Keagan Petersen should not have to wait for injuries to get a game. We have to try and see where they fit.
This is part of the rebuild. So that they also play a part and get the required experience. This is valuable in the long-term.
