Unpopular opinion: I like Zoom teaching.
And I like Zoom office hours even more.
how many hours have I spent on campus unnecessarily, sitting in an office waiting for no one to show up?
As for Zoom teaching: I already did multimedia lectures to 150 students in person. This is easily transferred to Zoom, where I can convene student panels of 6 or so people who can engage in discussion with me. Basically I have an ongoing panel throughout my lecture.
That's much higher engagement than I would have in an in-person lecture hall. I was successful at getting 15 or 20 students to talk in lecture, but it was diffused throughout the hall. On Zoom it's more of a face-to-face experience.
As for small seminars of 10-20, what's the difference? A little more human warmth and interaction in person, but otherwise it was fine to see those faces on screen. The tradeoff in commuting time and gas and environmental damage is worth it.
maybe just get together live every month for a special event like a guest speaker or student papers
and I never want to attend another live faculty meeting again. For any reason.
