Prussia was dissuaded from annexing Saxony in 1866 by both France and Austria. Saxony did however join the North German Confederation in 1867.
With its capital in Dresden, the state had an area of 14,993 km sq and a population of 2,556,000 in 1871. This Lutheran state was ruled by a Catholic monarchy. This was because until 1763, the Electors were also Kings of Poland and Lithuania.
