A few things I've learned following our island wide waste stream for our new video series:
- 300 tons of trash go into the landfill daily
- only 20 tons of recycling are picked up each week
- plastic is being collected & stored, not recycled atm because no one wants it
- Recycling is FREE for everyone on island. All you have to do is put it in the bin at home or drop it off at any of the three transfer stations
- hazardous household waste like batteries, oil, paint, and e-waste are also FREE to drop off at the harmon transfer station
- recyclers barely make a profit because of shipping costs and the shrinking market for it since China shut the world out
- small scale local recycling is a viable solution to our plastic problem
- reducing our consumption and banning single use plastic + Styrofoam would help
-Only 19,000 households are signed up for trash collection. On an island with close to 200,000 people that number is way too small, and also goes to show why illegal dumping is so rampant
- education is needed across the board about our entire waste stream and recycling
