MADONNA: the legacy and cultural impact of the Queen of Pop.
(a thread)
Lately I have seen some people underestimate the cultural impact that Madonna has had during her career. With what little she had, she revolutionized the music industry and many concepts used today have been popularized by her and you may not even know it.
Madonna was already considered a genius of music, due to her IQ of 140. She has always had creativity as one of her best qualities, this has resulted in a career full of iconic and culturally relevant moments not only for the music industry but for the world itself.
'Eras':
Madonna helped to popularize the concept of "eras" in a more extravagant way. Before her, almost no artist reinvented their image and sound with each album. (David Bowie was one of the few) This concept was such a big trend that it is almost essential for any artist today
Tours:
Madonna brought theatricality to the music shows.
Concept, beginning-middle-end, customs, divide a show by acts, scenery, acting, are factors that she introduced with a Blond Ambition tour. Which is considered a watershed for music shows.
fun fact: in this tour, Madonna popularized the headset microphone and for a long time were known as "Madonna's Mic"
Video clip:
Madonna helped popularize the introduction of political subjects and important messages in videos (she addressed issues such as: teenage pregnancy, abortion, racism, female empowerment, sexuality, etc ...) at a time when videos were rare and made out of choreography.
Sex:
Many people say that Marilyn already used sexuality as a form of empowerment, but this is false.
Marilyn was a victim of mass sexual objectification and lived in pain to get out of this pattern.
Madonna explored her sexuality and shared her sexual fantasies with the world.
Showing that women also feel pleasure and that they should not feel embarrassed when talking about sex.
She brought to the mainstream media a sexual but non-sexualized / objectified version (made for male consumption) version of a woman.
It was said that she had gone too far.
Women's empowerment:
Madonna is the first female artist to have complete control of her career, right on her firsts studio albums.
She ran away from the "good girl" standards imposed at the time, a bolder version of Cindy Lauper.
The fact that Madonna never let anyone tell her +
what to do was a factor that led Pope John Paul II to become concerned about her influence in the world and then ask for an audience with Madonna, who replied: "If he wants to see me, buy a ticket and go to my show like everyone else " +
the media considers Madonna as the most important woman in music, opening doors for all the singers who came after her. Making people stop what they were doing, to hear what she has to say (or sing), something rare to happen to a woman at that time.
detail: Madonna is NOT the only important woman in music, PLEASE do not spread this type of information. There are many women who had contributed to the music industry. I will comment more on this in the thread.
LGBT's:
To no one's surprise, Madonna was one of the first artists to support the LGBT cause in the period of the spread of the HIV virus, where no artist wanted to tie their image to the community.
Madonna gave interviews, did shows where all the profit was passed on to +
laboratories to research against the virus and the AIDS disease.
The singer also popularized Voguing, a dance created by black lgbts from the NY periphery, where she took dancers from precarious situations to present this culture to the world on her Blond Ambition Tour.
A lot of ppl say that Madonna has appropriated a culture created by black and peripheral LGBTS.
But the pioneers of Voguing say the opposite:
according to them, she didn't "steal" anything and without her, the world probably wouldn't know what Voguing is.
Madonna was severely criticized for introducing elements of LGBT culture to the mainstream, but she never bowed her head and in 92 brought songs about loving one another, without prejudice.
Versatility (Reinvention):
Like the concept of 'eras', versatility was one of Madonna's main weapons, as it brought different sonorities, different aesthetics and above all different characters to each era of her career. This is visible on her tours in which the singer +
NEVER repeats a performance, not even the choreography, the arrangement, the remix, the scenery, nothing. Everything is made from scratch.
Besides being one of the first singers to reconcile the singer's career, with that of actress, businesswoman, director, writer, etc.
Fashion:
Time included her as one of the top 100 icons of all time in fashion, style and design. Critics praised Madonna's style during her career, which became the definitive look in the 1980s.
Madonna was the first women to have "wannabes" (fans that would dress like her)
Madonna's impact to the wolrd was more that just in music.
Her style and way of living were copied all over the world, Madonna was the opposite of what girls were meant to be at that time, and a lot of girls would say that being like her was a form of freedom.
To complete the thread:
The media claims that Madonna's DNA runs through the veins of every musical artist, because the formulas that Madonna popularized/created have become so common in the industry that the chances of finding someone who doesn't use them are very rare.
there are countless artists that claim Madonna as inspirations; Beyonce already said that wanted to follow Madonna's footsteps, Rihanna said that she wanted to be a black Madonna, Gaga & Britney claims that Madonna is one of their biggest inspirations, etc.
Just as I did this thread talking about her legacy, I feel a responsibility to say that a lot of things ALREADY existed before Madonna and a lot of things were popularized by other artists, like Nina Simone, Aretha, Mariah, Janet and we shouldn't take credit from them.
Anyway;
Madonna left a small town, with only $ 35 in her pocket, went to NY, without discipline, without investment, without support, just with a dream ... and then became the most successful female artist of all time, paving the way for every female artist that would came after
