As a staffer, I’d sometimes commute by bus, getting dropped off right at the foot of the approach to the House, across from Longworth.

There was something so inspiring about stepping off transit and being right there, delivered to the seat of democratic power.
Similarly, something about the magnificence of it in quiet hours, like a late night arrival at Union Station, and walking across Capitol Square with the lit up dome and the reddish sky.
I share these anecdotes with understanding for those who are concerned about the Capitol being permanently blocked off forever.

Part of feeling our democracy is being able to be as close as we can to it—to feel it around us, like we belong.
