VF is a 3-button game! (Punch/Kick/Guard)
In order to guard attacks, you have to stand still, so movement is not as freeform as a game like Tekken. In addition, backdashing puts you into a special counter-hit state that all characters can get a full combo off of.
In order to guard attacks, you have to stand still, so movement is not as freeform as a game like Tekken. In addition, backdashing puts you into a special counter-hit state that all characters can get a full combo off of.
The safest movement is forward dashing or forward crouch dashing (input down-forward twice) which can be cancelled into Guard.
Throws are true mixups in VF, and cannot be broken based on any visual tell. Most throws are broken with forward+Punch+Guard, back+Punch+Guard, or neutral Punch+Guard. A large portion of the cast can get 25% or more health from a single throw, plus a knockdown mixup situation.
Breaking a throw often gives you frame advantage, but it's not in your favor to try to break so many throws with 33% odds. You can alternatively beat throws with ducking, crouch dashing, and attacking.
Attacking is throw immune in VF, so if the opponent has advantage and you think they will try to throw, you can attack right through it. This is "Abare"!
Ducking, crouch dashing, and attacking from disadvantage are all beatable with a simple Mid attack. This means that the basic 50/50 mixup game in VF (called "Nitaku" - "two choice") is Mid vs Throw, as opposed to Mid vs Low.
Many lows do not grant frame advantage on hit, but some characters have a wider selection of lows or more rewarding ones. All characters can use Mid/Throw effectively, but Mid/Low will vary based on your opponent's tendencies and the character you use.
You can Evade (sidestep) any attack that does not track to the direction you are stepping. Tracking is hard-coded into the game on a per-move basis, and is easily visible in training mode! Attacks that can catch an Evade in this manner are called "Circulars".
Half-Circulars catch Evades in one direction, and Full-Circulars catch Evades in either direction. If you get hit with a Circular while attempting an Evade, you will be counter-hit, and often turned to your side.
When turned on your side, attacks that you block or are hit by get a frame advantage bonus (depending on the strength of the attack).
Evading is a good idea if you are at a frame disadvantage, because you'll avoid most of your opponent's attacks and will gain a frame advantage situation.
A successful Evade always takes precisely 23 frames, so post-Evade situations can be reproduced and practiced, based on your frame situation before the Evade and the particular attack you Evaded. Throws cannot be Evaded!
Any time you are at disadvantage, you have to think about how you will take your turn. Guarding or Evading might get you thrown, but attacking might simply be frame trapped.
There are advanced movement/defensive techniques, but those are also readable. There is no air-tight way of defending yourself if the opponent is strong!
At its core, VF is about rules that all characters and players must obey. This provides a solid framework for reading the opponent's actions. There are some rare moves that are able to break rules, but these usually lead to punishes or guaranteed 50/50 situations.
What does this all mean? It means that VF is a game of rapid-fire decision-making anchored heavily on pure reads, with an offensive lean. The stronger you and your opponent become, the more interesting things get, with layered interactions continuing to evolve!
