Facebook's Oversight Board has overturned a decision to remove a piece of anti-Muslim content published in Myanmar the week of the 2020 elections https://oversightboard.com/decision/FB-I2T6526K/
Encouraging to see this decision online and published in Myanmar language. Hope this drives more transparency and engagement around the Board’s work
Would’ve liked to see more math on the view that the post would not lead to discrimination. On what basis did they accept input saying “male Muslims are psychologically unstable” is not derogatory (even if satire)?
A few other things that were interesting. The importance of the specific language in Facebook’s Community Standards is notable i.e. it seems to matter a lot
The Board received a slightly different translation for the post and this played a role in their decision.
The user’s appeal appears to have been factored into the decision (they said they were opposed to religious extremism).
In general, following the analysis based on the short narrative description given about the original post was cumbersome (at least in English!) Could more be shared about original posts in future case decisions to better inform the public’s understanding of these decisions?
