NYC will continue to lead by example in fighting the climate crisis that threatens all our residents, especially our most vulnerable communities. #SOTC2021 #ARecovery4AllOfUs

New York City will move forward to ban new fossil fuel connections in new construction by at least 2030. The city will establish intermediate goals in the short-term and ensure the new ban does not negatively impact renters and our underserved communities.
Next month, NYC will launch a citywide engagement effort, led by NYC Environmental Justice Advisory Board, to publish first-ever NYC Environmental Justice For All report. This study will engage communities that have borne the brunt of the climate crisis.

The study will go on to inform future polices, programs & procedures to ensure future admins also work to close environmental & health disparities & at the same time, distribute the benefits on the City’s #GreenNewDeal equitably to frontline communities.

Speaking of frontline communities, this year, New York City will create new spaces in more than 30 of the neighborhoods hit hardest by COVID-19 so that New Yorkers will be able to gather together and begin to rebuild the city we love.
Vison Zero will be expanded to make both the Brooklyn Bridge and Queensboro Bridge safer for bikers and pedestrians alike. NYC will also begin construction on 5 new Bike Boulevards, streets that are designed to give bicycles travel priority and put cyclist safety first.
Earlier this week, NYC again seized a huge opportunity to lead on climate action when three major pension funds made historic divestments from the fossil fuel industry while making significant investments in green technology. But that’s not enough.

To be climate leaders we must increase investments in climate solutions to $50b by 2035 + move our funds to net zero GHGs by 2040. To ensure progress continues in the future, funds should begin reporting on carbon footprint of pension portfolios + progress towards decarbonization
NYC must continue to lead by example on climate action if we are to save lives, by ending the age of fossil fuels and securing a livable climate for present and future generations.
