@SatPaper The Morrison government has belatedly released a once-in-a-decade review of Australia’s environmental laws, three months after receiving the final report.
On a Thursday dominated by the news of Labor’s shadow cabinet reshuffle, the environment minister Sussan Ley said the review was “far-reaching” but did not hold a media conference to discuss it
nor release the government’s response| I heard Ley’s own version of an announceable: that she would read it!! After having it for 3 months??? Not questioned by interviewer #auspol
The head of the review, former competition watchdog head Graeme Samuel, found the environment is suffering from decades of failure by governments to improve protection systems, reports Guardian Australia.
He made 38 recommendations to transform the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, including the creation of a new set of national environmental standards, a new regulatory compliance office, and an environment assurance commissioner.
Samuel also called on the government to abolish the effective exemption from environment laws granted to native forest logging covered by regional forestry agreements between the federal and state governments.| Do we expect any of these recommendations to be accepted? #auspol
