manchester city's history: a thread
1. st mark's cricket club formed a football team in 1880, later to be known as manchester city.
they were founded 2 years after manchester united, 6 years before arsenal, 12 years before liverpool and 25 years before chelsea.

2. in 1894, one of the clubs biggest players, billy meredith, was signed. in his initial twelve years for city he made 339 appearances and scored 129 goals.
3. in 1906, city were done for financial irregularities and lost key players such as billy meredith. meredith, along with more city players, transferred to manchester united. most blues were happy with this as it meant the players remained in manchester.
4. within four years at united, the ex city players helped the club win 2 championships and the fa cup.
in 1916, meredith returned to city making 28 appearances.

5. due to war damage at old trafford in 1941, united played at maine road (rent free) while playing in old city kits. city helped united until 1949 when they moved back to old trafford.
6. in 1949, city signed the former nazi paratrooper bert trautmann. hostility towards germans was still high in england at this time but he started to gain acceptance by supporters as he played in all but five of the clubs next 250 matches.
7. in the 1956 fa cup final, trautmann suffered with a serious injury with 17 minutes remaining but continued to play, making crucial saves to preserve city's 3-1 lead and fa cup victory.

8. trautmann continued to play for city till 1964, making 508 appearances for the club.

9. 'the king' colin bell signed for city in 1966, playing for 13 years making 394 appearances and scoring 117 goals for the club.
