In his address @ubcprez says that students sometimes don't seek mental health help because they fear the reactions of, among others, their professors. I would hope this is not true but I offer some reassurance here if it is true. 1/4 https://twitter.com/UBC/status/1354814546439852039
In today's university (certainly at UBC) you need not disclose to your professors your illnesses or your treatments in order to get academic accommodation. The whole process is handled by a separate office. At UBCV it is the Centre for Accessibility https://students.ubc.ca/about-student-services/centre-for-accessibility 2/4
Professors, by and large, in my experience, are quite supportive of students if they do disclose. We often don't have any relevant skills to help you but the good news is we KNOW THAT and will point you to other relevant offices. 3/4
Your professors aren't (always) weird scary beings. Especially in the covid environment we share many of the pressures you are under and want to help if we can. Our university is after all an academic community of which both faculty and students are parts. 4/4
