Re the Firmino handball there — shouldn’t be overturned because they’ve changed the rule to handballs immediately leading to the goal (like on the assist), so I’m confused as to how this is being reviewed.
They explicitly changed the wording I’m not reading too much into this, VAR should not have disallowed that goal and it was an error by the officials per the rule changes for the 2020/21 season.
Here is the language clarified in IFAB’s official paperwork that says exactly what I’m saying: that was not a handball per these clarifications and should not have been reviewed. (Highlighted portion.)
Sorry to go off on this one everyone but it’s really frustrating when officials don’t know the rules theyre applying if I — a girl in her late twenties who has not referred since being a teenager — knows and can find this language so quickly.
Final thing: I cannot comprehend how it would be deemed intentional* as the contact to me seemed to be a result of the player being fouled, which to me negates any notion of intention pretty clearly.
*as some are clarifying for me — thanks!

can now see how it was read as deliberate, but only in slow motion, not in real time — & slow mo isn’t supposed to be used for determining intent per The Athletic’s article ahead of VAR implementation in the EPL. Glad for that, though, as it saves me writing a rules article again
