There are rumours today that a very anticipated game (not a Bioware title) sequel won’t be released until 2026, 15 years after the previous game. Even though these are rumours it speaks volumes to the problem with AAA games these days. 1/x
The expectations by both the fan base and stock holders is becoming so high it’s becoming a Herculean task to get these games made and whole studios are pretty much betting their futures on these monstrous productions. 2/x
Part of me wonders if perhaps, everyone should walk back our expectations and be open to even AAA studious releasing smaller more compact games (at a reasonable cost to make & buy). 3/x
We’ve seen the stress these huge games put on the studios and more importantly the people (all the people) making them. I’ve always believed in quality or quantity even if I make love having a giant game like DAI. 4/x
The problem is, can we walk these expectations back and if we do, what does that mean for gaming? My two favourite games of all time are relatively small (DA2 & LiS) and from that perspective I’m more than happy with smaller games. 5/x
But we have a voracious game community that usually will eviscerate any game they deem as “not perfect”. However, I know that something has to give or the whole system will break. Thoughts? 6/6
