So @OutNmbrdByBoys and I were talking earlier about how we think our kids are gonna have a rough time going back to in-person school. They miss their friends, but their online school programs are self-paced and they’re all way ahead of their grade levels.
Sitting in a classroom full of kids and doing grade-level work is probably going to be tough. Our oldest is in 5th grade and just scored 240 on the standardized test he just took. 12th grade is 222. Our first grader is doing algebra. How does she go back to a 1st grade classroom?
And I don’t necessarily think my kids are that much smarter than any other kids. (Okay, maybe a little.) They’re privileged, for sure. Between the brains they inherited from their mom and their dad’s paycheck, they’re pretty set. So what if all kids had the same opportunities?
If every kid had enough food to eat and a safe environment and their own laptop and reliable internet and teachers who were paid their worth, I bet we as a country could work wonders even during the pandemic. And those things are only a dream because we won’t let them be real.
This country is terrible at investing in the future. We see it with education. We see it with immigration. We see it with climate change and energy policies and diplomacy. We give up long term growth and success and achievement for sound bites that are politically expedient NOW.
It breaks my heart, y’all.
Folks, I appreciate you trying to help but I’m not asking for advice.
