Just made a podcast with young people about the impact of remote learning on their mental health. We thought it was going to be for other young people - as a bit of a "in solidarity message". It's probably better suited to adults because all the adults listening learnt👇 1/8
1) They feel more tired than being at 'normal' school. Their eyes hurt looking at the screen all day. They still have short breaks & by the time they have made lunch, they end up eating in their next lesson. Without the interactions of mates to break up the day-it is lonely. 2/8
2) Half were Yr 8. They lost half of Yr 7 & now Yr 8 - so they don't know their school/class very well. Some think there is a fear of putting your hand up to speak online in front of others because of the pressures being online brings & worry that it impacts their education. 3/8
3) They REALLY miss active lessons & creative lessons. They miss having time in their tutor groups to talk about life. Learning is infront of a screen with limited chat- which takes a life line for some to have any form of chat. It is increasing their stress. 4/8
4) They are aware of inequality amongst their friends. Some are working off phones. Some are getting into trouble because it looks like they aren't working but they don't have the right technology. Some don't get to catch up if their technology fails. They still get homework. 5/8
5) They don't think this is their teachers fault. They don't think teachers had enough time to prepare. They miss their teachers & they miss live interaction. This is not normal school & if there is another lockdown they would like people to think about this fact. 6/8
6) They think their day/lessons should be shorter, so they can find a balance for themselves in the things that are now absent from their education. Also recognise that some are key workers children, have caring responsibility and other things that mean they can't keep up. 7/8
7) I could go on. I won't but please do give it a listen if you are thinking about young people's mental health and/or education in the future. It will be online at 6pm tomorrow.
