Let me try and explain why some of us just Don't Want to Get Rid of Harry Potter: a thread.

Yes. There are better written stories with magic and kids and fantasy encroaching into the "real world" but here's the rub...

Everyone KNOWS Harry Potter. They KNOW the stories. You can talk to your friends about details in your favorite books. You know your houses. You dress up in costumes. You LARP as teachers, students, etc.

You drop HP, you drop that community...

Sure there's lots of great fantasy. But readership for those books are scattered. You can't just show up at a con dressed as your fave and just EXPECT everyone to know who you are let alone what series you're from and that can be disheartening...

As someone who cosplays minor characters from some very obscure places, I assure you constantly telling people who you are and where you're from can be exhausting.

AGAIN, everyone knows Harry Potter. They know the houses...

It's easy to FIND items from your favorite things when it's popular.

HECK you don't even NEED to buy actual licensed Harry Potter merch. Check out eBay and Etsy. It's chock FULL of amazing and crap rip off merch. You want a silver and green stripe hand knit scarf? oh yeah...

I have both actual Hufflepuff and fake striped ties. I have an actual gold/red private school tie used in the first HP film (which promptly got me told off my a 12 year old that my tie was incorrect- and I knocked the smug little jerk down a peg)

and I'm not getting rid of them

Why? Honestly because I like them. I already paid money for them and I'm not getting rid of ANY of my wands or the Marauder's Map.

I don't have to and I'm not caving to pressure to do so. I've already spent the money and received them as gifts. They remain in my display case...

It's not that I really enjoyed the books and films. Honestly, several of them could really use a complete rewrite. The Half Blood Prince was a bit of a mess.

My robe is hand made, as is my wand. I have a VERY McGonagall hat also handmade and I will wear them all again...

I put a lot of time and effort and money into everything I have and I am NOT KEEN on parting with any of it.

I get why some don't want us supporting the franchise any more. I get it. I do. I'm a trans nonbinary person.

But I was part of a whole that is hard to part with...

I belong to an imaginary house that supports and loves everyone, despite being created by a TERF.

Hufflepuff is MY house. I have taken it from the creator.

It is MINE and not hers anymore. I welcome ALL into my house....

If you want to drop all things HP, that's fine. You want to keep wearing your robes and waving a wand? Cool. I'm not gonna judge because I get it.

But actually putting pressure on folx to give up the thing they love despite the shitty creator's attitudes? ...

Especially when they can LITERALLY do so without putting any more money into the pockets of JK?

Honestly, you're just being a jerk. Just like that 12 year old kid.

We KNOW about JK. Just like we know about Lovecraft but I don't judge Call of Cthulhu players...

Because the Cthulhu mythos and the tales have been since wrenched away from the original source material and made anew, regardless of the shit attitude of Lovecraft.

Same with Rowling and HP.

Let folks do what they will, take the material and make it anew, okay?

It'll be better and stronger away from the TERFy attitude of the creator and be more inclusive for everyone.
