Want to know how broken health insurance is? I have a Platinum PPO from a major carrier - literally the most Gucci plan imaginable. Got a bill from the hospital that performed my daughter's open heart surgery (the bill far exceeded our max out-of-pocket, but that's not the point)
HERE is the point: there was a line item - "Newborn Resuscitation." Yeah, you know what that means. Cost: $647. REJECTED by the insurance carrier. WTF?
The ambulance bill that our daughter from where she was born to the hospital for the surgery? Deemed "Non-Emergency" and only partially covered. Never mind that her heart literally COULD NOT PUMP OXYGENATED BLOOD and she stopped breathing half a dozen times on that ride.
If I wasn't the CEO of a company that pays millions in annual premiums to this insurer I would literally be up Shit Creek without so much as a paddle. Fortunately when I call they pick up the phone. If it had been one of my associates? No way. They'd be left to flounder.
I'm going to be honest, I am not smart enough to tell anyone reading this what the solution is. But the first step is for EVERYONE to acknowledge there's a problem that needs to be FIXED. Greatest nation on earth... charging $647 to resuscitate a newborn child.
