before you attack me for this thread just know that it is not my intention to compare their closeting and struggles, i am mere pointing out just some of the things that management did to ziam’s closeting after seeing the reactions to larry’s closeting. at the end of the day they
+ are all still closeted artists. at least read this first before you form an opinion on my thread. https://twitter.com/5thwheelniall/status/1353204143079510019
i have to mention that without the help of @HTPOLARI i don’t think this thread would’ve been completely done. so thank you so much g

Normalization of Touch
Larry: If you look into the x-factor video diaries, larry was very touchy and couldn’t keep their eyes off of each other from the start. It’s pretty obvious that people would notice that something is off when management all of a sudden makes them sit

Media Repression
Larry: The world went crazy over larry at the start and management let them. Management let interviewers ask the boys about larry, allowed them to go on with their speculations. That combined with ‘genuinely they think we’re in a relationship’ as an answer

Perception

+ people thought that he was more freer. Putting it out there that ‘it’s not that important’, he started becoming more like him. However with Louis, he was forced to be less flamboyant and open about himself to the point where he looked so uncomfortable and stiff in everything
+ that he was doing or when he was in public.
Ziam: Management took liams traditional masculinity, used it, and made him look even more masculine so that no one would ever doubt that he’s gay. Make him tweet about duck dynasty. And zayn, he was potrayed that mysterious guy, or

+ the player like a typical bad boy with a leather jacket. Having tattoos of his so called ‘girlfriend’ and cigarettes. These images made people assure with the fact that they’re not gay at all, just straight up dudes or bros. I mean Liam was in the cover of a gay magazine, but
+ no he’s definitely not gay, nobody would suspect anything bc sadly he doesn’t ‘look’ like it.

Easier to see through: Harry, a member of the biggest boyband in the world gets paired up with Taylor, one of the biggest female artist of the world which made this a high profile bearding, where a lot of eyes focused on their so called relationship. High profile
+ bearding, a celebrity getting a beard that is also another celebrity fails due to the fact that each of them have a career of their own that is show cased in the public eye. Interviews will be done, headlines will be make, and thus they are able to slip up or screw up the stunt
+ in a whole because of the status they hold in the industry. One little slip up could destroy the credibility they were building, since major outlets may have already picked up on the slip up and spread the news around.
Harder to see through: Liam and Sophia, as fake as it is,
Harder to see through: Liam and Sophia, as fake as it is,
+ it worked well. While Liam may have been a member of the biggest boyband in the world, Sophia was just an unknown person who did her part well. She posts a few pictures on social media, participate in pap walks, but other than that there’s no word from her whatsoever. Liam
+ plays along, at least social media wise. And then if people ever questioned their relationship, they would simply respond with “they are a private person/couple who doesn’t like being in the eye of the public”. This works because the beard in question is showed to the public as
+ a private person who doesn’t like to be interviewed and stuff, thus minimizing their interaction with the public and keep the lie from being slipped up or give away, and when asked they can simply say “private”. They also manipulate the social media accounts of a celebrity,
+ since they themselves can’t be trusted to convincingly sell it. Then allow the public’s straight-is-the-norm goggles to do the rest.
Credibility

Louis: On two separate occasions Louis’ twitter account has issued denial of Larry and his queerness in general (I think you already know what tweets I am talking about). Now however those tweets have angered many fans due to the fact that they noticed how it
+ doesn’t sounds like them at all, you can clearly tell by the tone and the way that it was worded that an SMM was the one who tweeted those. This was of course ineffective because fans are quick to point out the inconsistency of the tone, and after portraying the celebrity as a
+ rather intelligent and tolerant person looking back at the supposed homophobia of the tweets is extremely suspicious looking.
Liam: On two separate occasions, Liam’s Twitter account showed support for Duck Dynasty and its homophobic star, as well as confirming his total
Liam: On two separate occasions, Liam’s Twitter account showed support for Duck Dynasty and its homophobic star, as well as confirming his total
+ not-gayness. And then there came the time where it was announced that Liam would be on the cover of a gay magazine, people came out of the woodwork to mention how he could finally repent for his homophobic dude-bro ways–or else they kvetched about the unfairness of a straight
+ man landing the cover. But you need to understand that Liam’s tweets were staged just like Louis’. So why is it that a fandom known for its analytical ability collectively dropped the ball on the sketchiness of the guy who is comfortable enough to mimic giving bjs on stage and
+ rebuked an interviewer for assuming he didn’t mean he had a crush on a dude, suddenly making homophobic remarks? Does that add up? No. Though some people claimed the evidence as just Liam being supportive of Harry and Louis. Which not only does that line in reasoning stand in
+ direct contradiction to the belief that he had authorized those tweets, it robs Liam a lot of his agency as an individual as well. As it happens, that’s exactly what’s needed to keep him closeted. And you might need to add the portrayal of Liam as this ‘dumb jock’. You might
+ ask, why is it important? It’s because portraying someone as unintelligent strips them of their agency. It makes their deeds and words appear less consequential–if they can’t even process the full gravity of what they’ve said or done, why should we? And so they work from the
+ earliest possible date to ensure things Liam says aren’t taken seriously. If possible, do so via a media portrayal that aligns them with a traditional view of what an ignorant person looks like and enjoys. Keep “their” tone in social media consistent so that homophobic remarks
+ come across as sincere.
Let Bias Win

Larry: The conversation between Harry and Louis has always been about their relationship. From the start management had already disrupted the discussion since they played the “all the gay talk have put a tear on their friendship, look at what you’ve done” card, to
+ antis it meant “you were right, larries ruined it for everyone”. To larries it meant “you were right, and if you talk about it more we’ll the drive the wedge even deeper”. Thus drove a wedge in the fandom for there to appear both antis and larries, and in a sense they meet in
+ the middle. This got management what they wanted a little at the start, for the Larry talk to be discussed behind closed doors. The speculation grew to be something condemned in the larger fandom–the fans meeting them halfway and taking up their cause. But the conversation
+ didn’t die off. Management unwittingly legitimized the conversation because they gave it their stamp of disapproval. This was very ineffective because by they gave legitimacy to the speculation after disrupting and condemning the conversation from the outside.
Ziam: Ziam however went a little differently. As management never addressed Ziam rumors after blacklisting any kind of questions regarding it. Setting an image of both Zayn and Liam. Never minimizing their public interactions. Having slightly believable beards. And using the
+ heteronormative pattern to their advantage. Fans and public were secure enough to the presented heterosexuality of Ziam that management didn’t feel the need to do the same thing they did with larry. They didn’t need to put up a sign and scream that Ziam isn’t real because
+ people were already doing it for them. They saw the heteronormative pattern and knew the public would respond to it. And when the public did, it meant Modest didn’t have to do much at all.
and that’s the end of the thread. i apologize in advance if i had said some wrong things or have many grammatical errors and such. see you next time !
