I remember a long time ago a cop in my city was fired for cowardice. A gunman had appeared, and everybody ran, including the cop. He hid behind something waiting on the cops, I guess. That was indisputably the most crystal clear moment where a cop has to stand forth and not run.
John Roberts made me think of that. A case of original jurisdiction between the states can't be dismissed. It has to be heard. It's the crystal clear moment that defines how the SC is different. It had to stand forth and hear the case. Instead, Roberts ran and hid because scary.
I think he hid behind the chest freezer with popsicles and ice cream at the QuickStop. Other frightened citizens asked, "Aren't you supposed to be out there?" He said "No, I don't have to risk negative press and my social status for anyone." They said, "But it's not about you."
