Something's odd about this otherwise good report from the Charlotte diocese, which has been identified by a local attorney representing survivors, Seth Langson, as "one of the least transparent" dioceses in the nation. /1 https://www.ncronline.org/news/accountability/came-latin-incense-and-burned-books-out-went-half-parishioners
What's odd is that, while the article states that the Charlotte diocese opened a minor seminary last fall, and features a photo of that seminary, noting it's near Mount Holly, North Carolina, the article does not state that Belmont Abbey College is co-sponsoring this seminary. /2
Mount Holly is right beside Belmont Abbey. The article has a link to an article about this minor seminary when it opened, noting that its architecture mirrors that of Belmont Abbey, but not noting Belmont Abbey's major role in running the seminary. /3 https://www.ncronline.org/news/parish/charlotte-diocese-opens-college-seminary-serve-growing-catholic-population
But the seminary's own website proudly notes its sponsorship by Belmont Abbey, "one of only 15 universities in the United States recommended by The Cardinal Newman Society for its commitment to a faithful Catholic education." /4 https://stjcs.org/formation/belmont-abbey-college/
It's strange, is it not, that none of this is explored in the article about what's happening in the Charlotte diocese, whose current bishop β closely connected to the abbot of Belmont Abbey, Placid Solari β is cultivating the most regressive form of Catholicism possible. /5
Why is the role of the Catholic college in the same diocese, one of only 15 Catholic colleges considered truly Catholic by the Newman Society, not being openly discussed here? That role is far from minimal. /6
