2/ The Lout lounges away in the gilded & garish splendor of Mara f-ing Lago. This Lout, whose gifts of self-promotion, feral rage, domination & willful blindness were on full view from the White House, continues to fascinate our media & enthrall millions of my fellow-citizens.
3/ I watched the news this morning. In spite of having a new President who is reasserting decency and honor as he and his able team try to help us recover from the disaster of his predecessor,...
4/... the media keeps breathlessly reporting the inactivity of the out-of-office Lout. “Great divisions within the GOP!” “McCarthy on plane to consult with Lout!”
5/ Meanwhile, there’s a little box in the corner of the screen showing how many tens of thousands are dying weekly of the virus. I left the room after a half-hour, and still no one had talked about anything but the non-comings and non-goings of the Lout.
6/ They’re dying all around us while arrogant fools go maskless, prancing to their doom in the Lout’s version of freedom.
7/ A Beloved member of my family is in a hospice unit and I can’t get to him because of the viral spread being caused by the reckless. Congregations are dwindling away on Zoom. The party of Lincoln wallows in the Lout’s depravity.
8/ Inside the Lout’s gilded cage, as The Screwtape Letters teaches us, the Lout is muttering, “It was Congress’s fault. It was Pence’s fault. It was the Media’s fault. It was Jerod’s fault. It was McConnell’s fault.."...
9/...Meanwhile, in the caves of eternity, listening in, are his future companions. Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin are yelling at him, “Shut Up you two-bit whiner!”
10/ Meanwhile, also over in another billion-dollar gilded home remote in the Russian vastness, a beleaguered Putin gets some relief from the threats mounting against him by looking at the Lout’s minions who continue their assault on American Democracy.
11/ Will the GOP succeed in replacing American Democracy with the world’s next fascist oligarchy? Putin ponders whether to check in on his friend Rupert to make sure their propaganda is still aligned.
12/ And in the Gospel, I read with new understanding the anguished cry of Jesus of Nazareth: “What I say to you I say to all: Wake Up!” (Mark 13:33.)
