Unnatural light!
This is an easy one. Open a damn window! If it’s a small window, get right up in there! Maximum lumens means the camera doesn’t have to work as hard to stabilize your hand or pick colours out.

Wrong angle!
Okay, so I’ve got my window open and I’m Right Up In There, what now?
You may have to do some yoga, but good shots aren’t free! Careen your body around so that the light is hitting the same angle as your lens is pointing.

Focal length!
The position you’ve jammed yourself into is a bit close. The shot has parts in focus so you take it, but the parts in focus are the sides and back of the bud!
Move around and refocus so that the front of the subject is sharpest.

Boring composition!
No matter where you’re shooting from, there’s one angle that’s very difficult to make dynamic: straight-on.
Unless you’ve got some artsy composition in mind, try some angles.

Over/under exposed!
Okay, this is starting to look pretty good, but the colours are washed out. Sheesh.
On a phone, you can slide the exposure up and down after focusing to get it perfect. Hint: under- is better than over-! Editing is easier.

Too much background!
We’re alllllmost there. The only nitpick I’d have with this shot is that it doesn’t hone in on the subject well enough.
There’s a lot to be said for negative space! But it must be used with intention.
