Here’s the thing that continues to baffle me with our `wait and see’ approach to more transmissible VOCs in Ontario. All of the things we need to do are things that we’d want to do regardless of whether or not VOCs become established here: 1/
up our contact tracing game, improve surveillance (genomic and regular), more stringent quarantine for returning travelers, improve ventilation in schools and workplaces, use rapid testing, proactively support affected individuals, business, and communities, etc. 2/
We’ve been in lockdown for a while now. What progress have we made on any of these? Are we waiting to establish that VOCs are here to move on this? Because we shouldn’t be. 3/
These actions are all critical. They'll help ensure that we don’t open up and close back down for a third wave. They’ll get students back in class & keep schools open. They’ll keep the more transmissible variants at bay. They’ll buy us time to get the population vaccinated. 4/
A line from Ted Lasso (highly recommended): `it’s the hope that kills’, seems relevant here. I think optimism about vaccines as an exit strategy and wishful thinking that more transmissible variants aren’t going to be an issue here are preventing needed action now. end/
