(A thread on Tuchel's tactics:)
Lampard's biggest problem was solving the central midfield, and the lack of a true DM (Rice!) probably cost him his job.
Therefore, I can see Tuchel's rationale for 3-4-2-1, it's the pragmatic solution to a currently unbalanced midfield.

A double pivot maximizes the output of our current CMs:
- Kanté is our best player, and works best in a two
- Mount has lately been excellent in the pivot
- Kovacic' close control and ball progression will be utilised
- Jorginho benefits from the added protection of 3 CBs

It's natural to think Kanté starts most games, while Mount and Kovacic compete for the second spot. Jorginho CM4 but can still be involved a lot due to Mount fulfilling other roles.
4 players for 2 position means Billy goes on loan, but he will be in contention next season.

I can see this working in our favour and being a decisive factor for us going forward.
We know Tuchel is not "set" on a system, but until we sign a DM I expect 3-4-2-1 to be the most used formation.
And he can tweak the formation by using defenders or forwards as wing backs.
